Dunaj is a legendary Czech alternative rock band. The band got its fame in 80s and 90s and it disbanded in 1998. They got their fame not by filling stadiums (they didn’t play to large audiences) but by the beauty and uniqueness of their music. After an about 20 years long pause, the band was formed again several years ago and started playing both its old songs and new stuff.
I regretted that I hadn’t been to any concerts of the original Dunaj so the new formation of the band was excellent news to me. This time, I haven’t missed the chance and have been to several concerts of the band.
Last year, Dunaj started playing some of their concerts with Jana Vébrová. Although Jana Vébrová is not unknown to me, I have never been to any of her concerts. When I heard about a planned concert of Dunaj and Jana Vébrová in a nearby city, I got curious and went there.
Lucky me! The concert was absolutely amazing. I didn’t know what to expect and how the rock band can play with the singer-songwriter. It exceeded all my expectations. Dunaj demonstrated again that it doesn’t live in the past and that it’s open to new directions, including the influence from the new semi-member, with the same high quality. The performance and energy of Jana Vébrová were excellent and I admired how well she managed to sing also the old songs originally performed by Iva Bittová, not trying to imitate the legend and not to be artificially distinct at the same time. They are going to record a new album soon, I’m looking forward it.
